EDITOR’S INDEPENDENT REVIEW: Poppies Samui Resort is a small, intimate boutique hotel at the quiet south end of Chaweng Beach, and one of the most famous resorts on the island.Opened in the mid 1990s, Poppies was one of the first boutique beach hotels to open here, setting new standards for design, privacy and luxury on a small scale. Even today, with so many resorts following the boutique example, Poppies remains a classic that few can match.

The Thai-style cottages of Poppies are set amid lush tropical gardens, with cottages angled to maximize the views of foliage, while minimizing exposure to neighbours and passers-by. Thus they offer exceptional privacy and a romantic atmosphere.

The interiors are quite spacious, with small, side lounge areas and green, semi open bathrooms. While rooms are air-conditioned, the doors and windows can be open to the sea breeze and guests can use fans and mosquito nets when appropriate.

Each room has a pleasant terrace facing the gardens, one that can really be used in privacy. As with the rest of this special resort, the service is both refined and friendly.

Poppies’ swimming pool is small, set amongst tropical gardens with large natural rocks lining the edges. Even this ranks among the most stylish of its kind on the island.

Poppies Restaurant has become one of Koh Samui's most famous dining venues, with many visitors feeling that a trip to Samui was not complete without at least one evening meal here. It offers a highly regarded Thai, vegetarian and seafood menu. Poppies was also one of the Koh Samui’s first venues offering a creative menu of fusion cuisine. The location of the restaurant and wooden bar right by the sand and water is exceptionally cosy, and ideal for a romantic evening – especially near the full moon.

The beach at Poppies is as good as you get on Chaweng, with the fine sand being quite wide and water quite deep. It is generally very clear in the calm months, and excellent for swimming.

Poppies Samui Resort is famous for being one of the first boutique resorts on Koh Samui, and despite being there for long, it remains a classic of good taste and fine design. The video shows the rooms exteriors buried in their attractive gardens, the pool and famous seaview restaurant.
Poppies cottages combine the very best of Thai style with western comforts and amenities. The carved roof panels, floors, doors and windows are of solid teak and the fabrics are of finest Thai cotton and silk. Poppies underwent a major refurbishment in late 2006 including brand new and unique bathrooms with a sunken bathtub & shower set in marble, glass sink atop a teak table and a private garden.

Each cottage is L shaped like a small suite comprising a sleeping area with either a king-size bed or twin single beds, and a living area with an easy chair, marble table and a large comfortable sofa that converts to a full size single bed if required. Of course individual air-conditioning, ceiling fan, personal safe, flat screen LCD television (satellite and cable channels), DVD / CD player personal refrigerator, hair drier and free coffee & tea making facilities come as standard.

Outside is a private terrace with two teak easy chairs, a table and a ceiling fan.

Koh Samui. Thailand southern paradise island - the third largest in the country - lies in the Gulf of Siam and has long been famed for its incomparable beauty as a truly tropical island. Chaweng Beach, with its silver-white powder-fine sand and crystal-clear blue water, is one of the best beaches in the world. Poppies lies on the best part, where there is no coral under the water - just pure sand.Koh Samui is an island of coconut palms - about 2,5 million of them. For sightseeing Samui has much to offer - the mountainous interior conceals coffee and rubber plantations as well as tracts of untouched jungle and spectacular waterfalls. Strange rock formations abound.

The most impressive landmark is the Big Buddha, a huge golden image set on a rocky peninsula jutting into the sea. Other activities include Elephant Trekking, a visit to a Snake Farm, a Crocodile Farm, or the Butterfly Garden.
