Nai Harn is one of Phuket's most geographically diverse - and beautiful beaches

Hidden in a relatively quiet bay at the very south of Phuket Island, Nai Harn Beach's stretch of fine white sand is – in many people's estimation – part of Phuket's most beautiful beach. The bay is enclosed by big headlands and a coconut island, and from the beach only a single building can be seen, the iconic Phuket Yacht Club Hotel. The views all around Nai Harn Beach are grand at all times, and can be quite sublime at sunset.
.
Phuket's most famous sunset viewpoint, Laem Phrom Thep, overlooks this bay from the southern-most headland. Each evening this iconic lookout is crowded with hundreds, and sometimes a thousand or more visitors snapping sunset photos.
.
A Buddhist monastery acts as the guardian of Nai Harn Beach, permanently protecting its natural beauty from the over-development that has destroyed the environment of other parts of the island. This occupies the entire back of the beach, and in Thailand monastery land is sacred, and is not used for overtly commercial purposes unless there is an overriding benefit for the local community. That is never likely to include hotels, though a number of low-key restaurants operate among the trees above the sand, providing services to the many visitors here.
.
The sole beachfront resort here, the 5-star The Nai Harn, was built in Phuket's first tourism wave in the 1980s (then known as Phuket Yacht Club Hotel). This early bird had the great luxury of being able to choose among the island's best locations, and the developer selected what is surely the most beautiful vista of beach, hills, island and ocean on Phuket. For years this was the preeminent resort on the island, a status it has had to relinquish as many more modern and grander resorts arrived.
.
The other beachfront hotel on our map, Baan Krating Phuket Resort, and some small backpacker-style bungalows, Ao Sane, are hidden away in a pretty, quiet little cove a few hundred metres west, and reached by driving directly under the Phuket Yacht Club.
.
With so few hotels and buildings here, this beach has a distinctly less touristy atmosphere, though Nai Harn is now thoroughly discovered, and during high season the beach can get quite crowded by Thai standards. Beach massage is available in little pavilions at the top of the sand, and in addition to the restaurants in the trees there are always food and fruit vendors at the road entry.
.
A shallow lagoon at the east end of the beach fills and empties with the tides, creating a flowing channel that is like a natural, sandy water slide for children. The relatively safe conditions for young kids makes this a favourite with both Thai and foreign families, and helps make Nai Harn one of the best family beaches on Phuket. See the photos in the gallery here, and in the guide pages linked below.
.
The suburb of Nai Harn behind the beach has almost as many foreign faces as local, year round, for thousands of foreign expatriates live at this end of the island. During the high season Nai Harn sees a further influx of long-term visitors, many of them retirees, who rent houses here for months on end as a means of escaping the cold northern winter.
