East Maenam Beach offers everything from budget bungalows to super-luxury, 5-star resorts
The east end of Maenam Beach faces northwest, and is thus not directly exposed to the main monsoon and the waves it pushes in from the northeast. Being more protected, the beach is not as well developed as the west side, with much narrower sand. Some beachfront resorts have built walls to keep the ocean out, but this has caused some erosion. At high tide it is difficult to walk right to the east end of the beach.
Since all of Maenam is free of the offshore reefs that plague so much of Samui’s shoreline, the water is relatively deep and the swimming conditions good, even in those places where the beach is narrow.
Walking to Maenam’s east end is rewarding, for here we find an attractive sand spit pushing out into the sea. This changes in size and shape with the seasons, but generally provides a great spot for swimming and beach fun. You can continue beyond this towards Bophut Beach, though rocks make it difficult to pass all the way. At low tide it’s possible to walk all the way down Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village.
Considering how popular Maenam Beach is, there’s a surprising amount of empty beachfront land here, with resorts taking up barely half. Some older accommodations are in the process of redevelopment as hotel groups buy up the land under the old family-run bungalows to develop international-quality resorts. However, a number of the original family establishments continue, upgrading but by bit and resisting the pressures to sell.
The major sign of things to come on Maenam is the W Retreat Koh Samui. This luxurious, 5-star resort by the famous and prestigious W Hotels group is their first hotel in Thailand. W Retreat enjoys beaches facing two directions as well as spectacular hilltop views from its reception area. It has introduced a new level of fine, modern resort design to Samui. See this resort and photos of the best accommodations on this beach at Maenam's Top 5 Super-Luxury Beach Resorts.
The other luxurious 5-star resort here is the more traditional style Fair House Villas & Spa, which displays a distinct Chinese Oriental flavour. The villas and pool villas here are set into a tropical coconut garden.
Quick access is a major advantage of Maenam Beach, and the east side in particular. While all resorts here offer genuine beach tranquillity, it’s barely 10 minutes from the airport, and a little more into Chaweng with it’ nightlife, restaurants, shopping and markets etc. Bophut and the Fisherman’s Market is even closer, within walking distance for the fit.
Beware if on Maenam Beach after big storms, or planning on swimming; badly polluted, putrid water lies backed-up in a few small streams behind the beach, waiting for a flood of water to flush it out across the sand into the ocean.
