Lamai Central, as shown on our beach map, is the northern portion of the main beach that made Lamai famous; it is wide, sandy and leads into deep, clear water with a sandy bottom, making ideal swimming conditions. This part of Lamai is one of the few Samui beaches without an offshore reef to obstructs waves and tides, which refresh the beach. As the satellite map shows, such a reef begins just north of here, creating very shallow sand flats with quite a bit of rock and coral. Is you want good swimming conditions in front of your accommodation, look for a hotel here at the centre of the beach, or to the south.
With its backdrop of steep mountains covered in coconut palms and green forest, this is also one of the most picturesque beaches on Samui, especially when seen from the water. The beach is indeed beautiful, and beachfront resorts line it virtually side-by-side from here to the bottom – as shown on the three maps we use to cover this two-kilometre stretch of sand.
There’s only a short stretch of this beach without resorts right up to the sand – due to a road, leaving those hotels on the wrong side of it ineligible for beachfront status. Lamai also has many other hotels set well back from the beach, such that perhaps only 50% of all accommodations are now beachfront. Follow those shown here if you want a room really by the beach.
This is generally a moderate 3-star area, with a couple of more luxurious 4- and 5-star exceptions towards the top end. All hotels here have back doors (or is it front?) opening onto the main each road where lots of restaurants, bars, shops and street markets are found. There’s also a small nightlife scene here.
