Klong Prao North is a pretty beach facing a wide bay with shallow water

This Klong Prao map shows the northern part of the longest beach on Koh Chang. At the top of this sector there's a small, protected bay with an estuary that protects a handful of fishing and tour boats.
.
The beach is a little narrow, disappearing at the highest tides. But the water is also quite shallow, getting barely more than waist deep. You sometimes have to walk out a way for swimming depths. When the tide is low wide expanses of sand are exposed. The top of the beach is lined with thick trees and foliage, providing good shade through the hottest times of days and making this a great spot for relaxation.
.
As the map shows, the whole top end is lined with beachfront hotels, all in the 3- and 4-star range, with most accommodations in bungalow rooms spread through gardens. There are, however, a few hotel blocks up to three floors. Most of these resorts are quite good for family holidays.
.
The island’s main north-south road is not far behind the hotels. A few shops, local restaurants and ATM are found at the top end behind Coconut Beach Resort. There are a few smaller hotels on the main road without direct beach access.
.
Moving down the beach we reach the estuary of the Klong Prao river which empties out across the sand. You have to wade through or swim this at high tide, while there’s just a trickle of water flowing over the beach at low tide. The beach here is wider and sandier, with fewer people. The top of the beach is trimmed with coconut palms along this central stretch.
.
South of the estuary we find a more beautiful beach with soft sand, and a one of the more luxurious resorts on this beach, the Santhiya Tree Koh Chang Resort. Built lavishly in traditional Thai-style architecture, this is one of the highlights of Klong Phrao. Its beachfront coconut gardens are quite outstanding, where it offers beach lounges, a sea view restaurant, beach massage in the shade. Its spa offers Thai massage and other health & wellness body treatments. Santhiya has a kid's club and programmes for children, so is very family-friendly.
.
Coconut Beach Resort in the north offers beach cottages in a variety of styles, some with interesting tropical architecture around the swimming pool, others in beach gardens. Though the beach is not very wide or sandy here, this is closer to shops and conveniences on the back road.
.
Note that Koh Chang Resort has a large room block across the road. Take care when booking, if you want to sleep by the beach.
.
Klong Prao Resort has the most spacious ground of all resorts here, plus a long beachfront. Many of its rooms enjoy a unique location, facing a large canal that runs off the nearby river. With so much space, this is also a good resort for children and families.
