We also offer many more info pages about Kata and all other Phuket beaches:

Kata is a classic tropical beach in a beautiful bay

Kata Beach is considered the most beautiful beach on Phuket by many visitors. It lies in an attractive bay with lush green headlands at both ends, a backdrop of green trees along the beach and a green mountain closing in the back. A small coconut island lies offshore, giving the perfect mage of a tropical beach in any direction. Only the creep of hotels up Kata's southern hillside breaks this green view.
.
The sand on Kata Beach is exceptionally fine, soft and white, and the water crystal clear. Like all beaches on Phuket’s West Coast, Kata enjoys incredibly tranquil conditions during the winter high-season when the water is often glassy smooth and great for swimming. And, with the line of trees at the beach of the beach providing lots of shade, Kata is an excellent beach children and families.
.
The top-of-the-beach tree-line is a blend of pine-like casuarinas and spiky pandanus, highlighted by a sprinkling of coconut palms. From beach or boat it gives the impression that Kata Beach is largely undeveloped. But hidden well back behind those trees many hotels are packed into the treeless, suburb of the new Kata.
.
Only three, lucky beachfront hotels are found on Kata, all at the southern end of the sand. They are two small properties and just one larger one. Despite the great lack of beachfront accommodation facing Kata Beach, popular demand for this beautiful place has fuelled a boom in hotel construction filling the low, flat suburb to the back with dozens of small hotels with cheaper rooms and covering the hill overlooking the south end with hotel blocks. Together, these hotels house thousands of visitors who descend on the beach in peak season, making it quite crowded.
.
The sunsets from Kata Beach are excellent, and there is no better place in Phuket to enjoy sunset drinks and beach dining. The Boathouse has two excellent seaview restaurants. Nearby, in the southern most corner is a cluster of small beach restaurants & bars, forming (sometimes) a beach party zone. When many young people descend on this corner of Kata looking for a good time, mats and low tables with candles are laid on the sand in front of Ska Bar, and the party sometimes sparks, fires and rages into the night. But it's just sometimes, when the right mix of people fuses.
.
Enjoying the deep shade of the treeline, many open air beds have been set up along the beach for traditional Thai massage. An hour cost Baht 250 - 300 (US$6) in 2017, a price that has not changed in many years.

Kata Beach is popular for family beach holidays, though the lack of rooms right by the beach is something of a drawback, forcing some families to navigate traffic getting between hotel and beach.
.
During the monsoon season many people swim and surf the waves on Kata. This is the best surfing beach on Phuket, and one of the few suited to board riding in Thailand – but while the swells are reasonably constant through the monsoon months, they are not always well formed.
.
There is a lot more information about Kata in the travel guide pages herein, including information about the advantages of the monsoon season in Phuket, and a page showing photos of the evolution of Kata over the past 30 years, from a sparse, green village of rice fields to the mega beach resort it is today.
