Cape Panwa, the quiet southeast corner of the island.

Cape Panwa is the rugged southeast peninsula of Phuket, where mountains cut many picturesque bays and beaches as they fall into the sea. A few of those hidden coves provide 5-star beachfront resorts with private beaches, making this quiet end of Phuket rather up-market and exclusive.
.
With no heavy monsoon waves pounding this coast, the sand here is not as fine and soft as that on the west coast beaches. While the water is also not as clear as that along the famous tourist beaches, it is reasonable through the high season. But as you move further up the east coast towards the huge mangrove forests that cover much of this side of Phuket, water clarity declines rapidly. Phuket Port, located at the northeast of this beach map, receives the occasional cruise liner, though for the most part it is quiet with minimal activity.
.
Most resorts in Cape Panwa are also built on elevated hillsides, providing ocean view rooms in abundance with beautiful vistas of offshore islands. We have mapped eleven true beachfront hotels here, though there are yet a couple of others on the wrong side of the roads. One can easily find a quiet, romantic beach retreat here, large or small.
.
The beachfront establishments range from 5-star luxury at the south end, to mid range and family-run places up the west side facing Ao Chalong Bay, some suitable as long stay accommodation for those planning to miss cold winters. The Mangrove Panwa Phuket Resort is the newest on this coast, and while it hardly has a beach, it offers one of the most beautiful and tranquil environments. Panwa Beach Resort is a small but comfortable, mid-range beach hotel overlooking Chalong Bay, while Cloud 19 Beach Retreat is small, intimate and personal.
.
All of the top end resorts have a spa, massage treatments and a health club. The Radisson Blu Plaza Phuket Resort is the most family-friendly hotel here with beautiful terraced pools, a water slide and many children's activities. Cape Panwa Hotel & Spa is the oldest of the hotels here, and, being the first arrival, it got the nicest beach. Sri Panwa Phuket Luxury Hotel offers luxurious villas spread along a hilltop with grand views in all directions, with only a small private beach below. The Regent Phuket Cape Panwa is the newest arrival among the luxury resorts, and naturally, serves up the Regent's renown high standards from another spectacular hilltop.
.
Closer to Phuket Port we find two small, budget waterfront hotels, Fiji Palms Resort with British management and Phuket Boat Quay. These have no beach, but are small and suitable for those seeking budget accommodation rather than a full resort. Nearby is the large Phuket Panwa Beach Resort, which does indeed have a beach, a very attractive one though it is too shallow at most tides for swimming.
.
The east coast of Phuket is generally less developed than the west, and the feel of Cape Panwa area is distinctly 'Thai' as opposed to the overwhelmingly 'tourist' atmosphere all along the west coast, which can get quite crowded during the peak season. Cape Panwa, on the other hand, changes little during the high season, though each hotel's individual beach will have more visitors.
.
With the two sides of Phuket being so radically different in atmosphere, it is important for new visitors to check the beaches carefully, to decide which side of the island suits their needs. This site offers many more in-depth pages of travel information about Phuket, along with videos of most beaches during the high season.
