Maenam Beach offers accommodations from budget to luxury 5-star

To some visitors, Maenam Beach is simply Samui's best, for a variety of reasons: it is close enough to Chaweng Beach to travel there for dining & entertainment; it is far enough away from Chaweng to afford real peace & quiet; there is a local Thai village all along the beach, giving it an atmosphere is more Thai than tourist; the water is deeper and good for swimming; the coconut-shaded sands are as beautiful as most on Samui; the prices here are better than those in more up-market beaches.
.
Beach massage is available in the shade of coconut palms along the length of the beach, though few other beach activities are found here. Some resorts have kayaks, and there are sometimes a few beach catamarans. However, this is a beach for relaxation, a beach for reading books under the coconut palms, a swimming beach, not a party beach.
.
Hotels cover the full range from cheap beach cottages, villa resorts, family hotels, 5-star luxury to boutique spa resorts. There are still many budget bungalows here, right alongside some of the most beautiful resorts on the island. Many of the accommodations here are spread through lush gardens, like the luxury villas of the iconic Santiburi Resort, the first 5-star accommodations on the beach. Their mature, tropical beach gardens are some of the best on the island.

This beach is so long, and has so many beachfront hotels & resorts, that we have divided it into three beach maps for greater detail of the accommodations there.

Checklist of beach basics:
.
sand
The sand on Maenam Beach is not the exceptionally fine powdery stuff found on Chaweng Beach, for here it has a high granite content and the grains are somewhat chunky. You only have to look inland to the big mountain behind to see where the granite particles come from. However, most visitors will not notice – unless they look at the sand detail photos in our beach gallery. The sand still feels quite soft and pleasant to lie on. It is not particularly wide, however, and at spring high tides there is only a narrow strip left exposed in most laces. But during normal tides the beach appears very sandy and attractive.
Beware some of the places where ‘protective’ beach walls have been built – there may be no sand at all during all high tides. See below.
.
water
The water here is generally quite clean and clear, if somewhat greenish. But most importantly, most of this beach has a relatively steep incline, falling into quite deep water. Unlike much of the Samui coastline, Maenam has no offshore reef, and thus no rocky shallows between reef and shore.
.
swimming conditions
The good water depth mentioned makes this one of the best swimming beaches on the island. However, deeper water close to shore also means that young children need more supervision. Most of the resorts here have beachside restaurants or bars looking out over beach and ocean, giving parents pleasant spots form which to oversee their young ones.
.
shade
Natural shade of big beach trees is one thing lacking along much of this beach, generally due to the resorts clearing the beachfront for pools and restaurants right by the sand. Many simply don’t have space for hotel facilities and trees, and the latter have suffered. Beach umbrellas must there be employed in front of many resorts, while guests can retreat to the nearby restaurants when things get too hot.
There are some fine exceptions to this lack of natural shade however, with the outstanding example being at the huge, upmarket Samtiburi Resort, close to mid beach. This resort has had most facilities built back from the beach, with the beachfront area left to a natural forest of coconut palms and native shoreline trees. The result is surely the most beautiful and relaxing beachfront of all hotels on this beach.
.
density of use
A look at the photos in our Meanam Beach gallery tells the story, for we have some from all times of year. Even in the busiest seasons there are relatively few people on this beach. No part of it is ever crowded in the way Chaweng often gets.
.
beach access
There are many access lanes to Maenam Beach from the main road, but they are not always easy to find. Many lanes marked as entry to beach hotels often have no public access. It takes trying a few of the lanes to find one that provides public access, something best done on a motorcycle.
.
jet skis & speed boats & tranquillity
A few jet skis and speed boats operate off Meanam during the peak months of July and August, but rarely enough to be very intrusive. Most of the guests in this area come specifically for a peaceful beach holiday and don’t give the noisy operators any business, keeping most of them on Chaweng Beach.
.
beach hawkers
Again, there are a few of them here, with their most common offering being tropical fruits and the ever-popular Isarn finger foods like roast chicken, som tum and sticky rice. Most are quite polite and rarely intrude on guests’ privacy.
